Business Intelligence for Your Nonprofit Organization

Business Intelligence for Your Nonprofit Organization
Over the past several years, Big Data, Data Analytics and Data Visualization have become some of the noisiest buzzwords in the nonprofit lexicon. Data, analytics, and reporting together form the basis of business intelligence, and while many nonprofits are developing core competencies in one or the other of these key functions, it takes a true organization-wide commitment and approach to achieve the benefits of business intelligence and data-driven decision making. Confused about how all of this fits together and makes up business intelligence? This graphic should help:

Learn to Love Fixing Your Reports

So you’ve just migrated to a new CRM, or implemented a major change to your database and excitedly you decide to run some important reports on fundraising or program participation. But the first time you do – everything looks wrong! “Why did we just spend all this money,” you start to ask. “My reports need to be correct and reliable!” Well, of course that’s the point of reporting – to have a clear and accurate reflection of various slices of your constituents’ information. However in practice that’s rarely what you get the first time you go to create a report, especially on new data or especially after you’ve just migrated to a new CRM. You must often go track down some missing or bad data or you need to control for more variables in your data than you anticipated at first.

Reports reflect the status of your data and your understanding of it, so a report that looks “wrong” to you is usually an indication that you and your organization need to do some learning. It’s part of a vital exercise which serves to improve the overall effectiveness of what your organization does.

From tweets to live streaming, you could participate no matter your actual location. Below are some anecdotes of both the physical and digital impressions of the conference that I witnessed in DC and digitally with the help of Radian6.

During the Plenary on Thursday, the first day of #14NTC, the DoGooder awards were presented and one of the videos presented was this pop-up video style music video from the Canadian Cancer Society about the #Nutiquette or the dude’s guide to checking his nuts. It is pretty entertaining, informational, and safe for work:

Admit it – you laughed :p We all did!
